Tanzania moves to become Africa's mining equipment hub as domestic production begins
Localized manufacturing of essential mining supplies is crucial for maximizing local content participation and retaining wealth within the national economy
Kerege, Bagamoyo. Tanzania has officially commenced domestic production of underground mining supplies.
The minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, inaugurated a new specialized wire mesh manufacturing plant operated by Geofields Underground Support (GUS), a subsidiary of Geofields Tanzania Limited, in Kerege, Bagamoyo District over the weekend.
The facility represents a tangible step in the government's broader strategy to position Tanzania as a regional manufacturing hub for mining equipment and industrial consumables.
Addressing industry stakeholders during the launch, Mr Mavunde said localized manufacturing of essential mining supplies is crucial for maximizing local content participation and retaining wealth within the national economy.
"The commencement of domestic production for items used directly in mining operations is an essential milestone in elevating Tanzanian participation across the mineral value chain," Mr Mavunde stated.
"Our objective is clear: to establish Tanzania as the primary hub for mining equipment production and supply services across the African continent."
Mr Mavunde reiterated that the government remains committed to fostering an enabling environment for domestic investors, aiming to enhance the capacity of local enterprises to supply both domestic operations and expand into regional and international markets.
Strengthening local content and oversight
The establishment of the Geofields facility aligns with Tanzania's statutory framework under the Mining Act, which mandates local procurement preferences for goods and services.
Where domestic technical capacity remains under development, the law provides guidelines for joint ventures between local and foreign entities.
However, to ensure these frameworks deliver genuine local empowerment rather than superficial compliance, Mr Mavunde directed regulatory authorities to initiate comprehensive audits of all joint-venture entities offering services within the mining sector.
The audits aim to verify operational authenticity and confirm that statutory benefits accrue directly to Tanzanian citizens and registered companies.
Furthermore, the Mr Mavunde encouraged local business leaders to pool financial capital to leverage emerging high-value opportunities within the sector.
Self-funded mineral exploration
The opening of the Bagamoyo facility coincides with a landmark development in early-stage project development.
Tanzania is moving away from reliance on foreign aid and external debt for baseline geological mapping.
The ministry of Minerals has announced the launch of a comprehensive, nationally funded mineral exploration programme.
Presenting an update on the execution of Vision 2030: Minerals as Life and Wealth to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy last week and Minerals, Mr Mavunde confirmed that the major exploration campaign will be entirely financed using domestically generated mineral revenues.
The initiative follows a strategic legislative reform, which directs 10 percent of all non-tax revenues collected from the mining sector to be earmarked specifically for systematic geoscientific surveys.
At present, only 16 percent of Tanzania’s landmass has undergone high-resolution geophysical surveying.
The new funding mechanism aims to dramatically scale up high-resolution airborne geophysical mapping conducted by the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST).
"This extensive exploration campaign will allow GST to acquire high-density, high-precision geoscientific data," Mr Mavunde noted.
"Accurate data will enable the government to strategically allocate prospective ground to large-scale developers and, crucially, to artisanal and small-scale miners who have historically suffered capital losses due to a lack of scientific data," he noted.
