Dar es Salaam, Nairobi deepen economic ties with $500m investment deals
More than 50 non-tariff barriers have been successfully resolved in recent months, with a mutual commitment established to eliminate all remaining hurdles by mid-2026
Dar es Salaam. Delegations from Tanzania and Kenya convened at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Centre on Monday, May 4, 2026 to inaugurate the Tanzania-Kenya Business Forum 2026.
The summit, held against the backdrop of President William Ruto’s two-day state visit to Tanzania, served as a primary catalyst for a significant expansion in bilateral trade and investment.
The forum, themed Unlocking Private Sector Growth and Investment, culminated in the announcement of trade and investment agreements valued at approximately $500 million.
These pacts are designed to bolster one of the East African Community’s most vital economic corridors, moving beyond diplomatic goodwill toward a framework of implementation-driven economic diplomacy.
Officials confirmed the signing of over 20 commercial agreements spanning several strategic sectors.
Key areas of focus included transport and logistics, energy, digital connectivity, agriculture, and tourism.
The agreements aim to streamline cross-border operations and leverage the complementary strengths of both nations, with Tanzania’s rich natural resources and infrastructure potential aligning with Kenya’s established financial services and manufacturing base.
A significant portion of the forum was dedicated to addressing the structural barriers that have historically hindered regional commerce.
Government representatives said that more than 50 non-tariff barriers have been successfully resolved in recent months, with a mutual commitment established to eliminate all remaining hurdles by mid-2026.
This regulatory harmonisation is expected to further enhance the trade volume between the two neighbours, which has already surpassed the $1 billion annual threshold.
The event also facilitated more than 200 business-to-business meetings, providing a platform for private sector leaders to secure new contracts and explore joint ventures.
High Commissioners from both nations described the forum as a "defining moment", noting that the engagement reflects a shared history and a joint vision for regional prosperity.
The deliberations in Dar es Salaam are scheduled to continue on Tuesday, with President Ruto expected to travel to Dodoma to address the National Assembly.
This rare diplomatic honour underscores the strengthening ties between the two nations as they position themselves as a unified and competitive economic bloc within the global market.
