Dar/Zanzibar. Anticipation is building in Tanzania's vibrant cities of Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar as preparations intensify for the upcoming 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.

The prestigious competition, exclusively featuring players from their respective domestic leagues, is set to kick off on August 2, 2025, at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, with matches also slated for the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar.

Beyond the thrilling football action, the tournament is poised to deliver significant economic benefits and showcase the renowned hospitality of Tanzanians.

The economic ripple effect of CHAN is already being felt, with local businesses in Dar es Salaam expressing immense enthusiasm for the influx of visitors.

Vendors at the popular Coco Beach, known for its unique culinary offerings, are particularly optimistic.

A local businesswoman, said they are ready to cater to the expected crowds.

"At Coco Beach, we specialise in food, particularly our famous cassava dishes prepared in various ways, accompanied by fresh seafood and mishkaki (skewered meat)," she said.

She said they warmly invite all visitors to come and enjoy this unique Tanzanian cuisine.

Similarly, Reginald Chiombi, a Bajaj (rickshaw) driver, spoke of the transport sector's preparations.

"We are well-prepared to welcome guests and provide transportation services across different parts of Dar es Salaam," he noted.

Chiombi also extended gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for ongoing infrastructure improvements, especially road networks, which will facilitate quicker and smoother travel for visitors from the airport to the stadium and other key areas.

The sentiment of readiness extends beyond Coco Beach.

Restaurateurs across Dar es Salaam are gearing up to offer a diverse range of local and African cuisines.

Hussein Omary, a chef who served at the AFCON 2027 bid campaign, confirmed their preparedness.

"We welcome all CHAN visitors to our restaurant, where we have already begun promoting AFCON 2027. We are well-prepared to provide excellent service with authentic Tanzanian and African dishes," Omary said from Mwenge, Dar es Salaam.

The tournament's opening match will see hosts Taifa Stars face Burkina Faso at 8:00 PM.

Tickets are affordably priced, with VIP A seats costing Sh10,000, VIP B and C at Sh5,000, and general seating (mzunguko) at ZSh2,000.

These accessible prices are expected to encourage strong local attendance, further boosting economic activity.

Major Transport Firms on Board

Beyond the Bajaj drivers, larger transport companies, including bus and car rental agencies, are seeing a significant boost.

Their fleets will be crucial for ferrying teams, officials, and media between hotels, training grounds, and stadiums.

Tour operators are also preparing special packages to take advantage of the tournament, offering excursions to national parks, historical sites, and cultural attractions, encouraging visitors to extend their stay and explore more of Tanzania.

The improved road infrastructure, a testament to recent government investment, will ensure smoother logistics for all.

Retail Sector Buzzes with Activity

Retailers across both cities are also anticipating a surge in sales.

From supermarkets stocking up on goods to souvenir shops selling Tanzanian crafts and football merchandise, the increased footfall will translate into higher revenues.

Local fashion houses might even see opportunities to design and sell tournament-themed apparel.

The general buzz and heightened consumer confidence associated with hosting such a major event typically lead to increased spending across various retail segments.

Broader Economic Stimulation

The benefits extend to the entire supply chain supporting these businesses.

Food suppliers, security service providers, event management companies, and advertising agencies will all experience increased demand for their services.

Furthermore, the extensive media coverage, both local and international, will serve as invaluable advertising for Tanzania as a tourist and investment destination, creating long-term economic dividends that go far beyond the duration of the tournament itself.

Promoting tourism

Beyond the direct financial gains, the CHAN tournament serves as a powerful platform to promote Tanzanian tourism and culture on an international stage.

The presence of fans and media from across Africa will highlight the country's attractions, from the historical Stone Town in Zanzibar to the vibrant city life of Dar es Salaam.

Local citizens are also being urged to show their unwavering support for Taifa Stars.

"I urge all Tanzanians and football enthusiasts to be patriotic and turn out in large numbers on the opening day and throughout our team's matches," said Reginald Chiombi, emphasising the importance of demonstrating national pride and hospitality to international guests.

The collaborative efforts of the government, local businesses, and the public underscore a unified vision for CHAN 2025, not just as a sporting spectacle, but as a catalyst for economic growth and a testament to Tanzania's welcoming spirit.

With preparations well underway, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar are poised to deliver a memorable and beneficial tournament for all.
